It was compiled by Imam Muhammad bin Ismail al-Bukhari, who took sixteen years to edit it. He selected its hadiths from six hundred thousand hadiths that he collected.
Sahih al-Bukhari occupies a prominent position among Sunnis. It is one of the six books that are considered the main sources of hadith for them. It is the first book compiled on the pure authentic hadith, and is considered by them to be the most authentic book after the Holy Quran.
Sahih Al-Bukhari is considered one of the comprehensive books, which contain all the chapters of hadith, including beliefs, rulings, interpretation, history, asceticism, etiquette, and others.
The book gained wide fame during the life of Imam Al-Bukhari. It was reported that more than seventy thousand people heard it from him. Its fame extended to the contemporary era, and it received great acceptance and interest from scholars. Many books were written about it, including explanations, summaries, commentaries, additions, extracts, and other things related to the sciences of hadith, to the point that some historians reported that the number of its explanations alone amounted to more than eighty-two explanations.
