Sendebad: A story of struggle to build bridges of communication between generations and cultures to preserve identity, values, customs, traditions, and to live within the embrace of our true religion.
When I immigrated to Sweden, I was faced with a reality that both pained and inspired me. I saw many Arab children growing up without being able to speak, or even understand, their mother tongue.
The danger of this is that these children are growing up in an environment where their roots do not belong, and they have lost the key to connecting with their original values, heritage, culture, and even, for many of them, with their religion.
It is not just ignorance of the mother tongue, but it goes beyond that to the severing of family ties, as these children lose the ability to communicate with their relatives who remained in their homelands, and with their relatives who settled in different European countries.
The most important aspect is that these children are deprived of reading and understanding the Holy Quran.
Seeing this situation, I felt a great responsibility to take action. I knew that I was not alone in feeling this way, as many Arab parents around me were feeling the same concern. They wanted to pass on to their children not only their language, but their identity, their stories, their values, and so the idea of Sendebad was born.
At first, our mission was humble: to provide Arab parents with the tools they needed to teach their children Arabic in a fun, accessible, and easy way. But what started as a small collection of children’s books quickly grew into something much bigger.
We listened to our community and understood their needs, and expanded our offerings to include a wide range of books – from simple alphabet books for young children to stories and novels for older children and adults. Our goal remained clear: to make learning Arabic not just a task, but an enjoyable experience for the whole family.
As Sendebad grew, so did our vision. We realized that learning a language is not just about words; it’s about connecting with a rich cultural, spiritual, and religious heritage. With this understanding, we expanded our product range to include essential Islamic items and tools for everyday life – such as prayer rugs, Quran copies, and more.
Today, Sendebad is Sweden’s largest brand dedicated to empowering Arab families to build bridges between generations and cultures to preserve their identity, values, traditions and live in the embrace of our true religion. We are proud to be part of their journey.
But we won’t stop there. With the support of our community, we are on our way to reaching all of Scandinavia and beyond. Our goal is to continue breaking down barriers, strengthening the bonds between families, their language, culture and religion – one family at a time.
This is not just a business, we are excited to be part of our children's future.
