“Now.. Here, or the Eastern Mediterranean Again” is a novel by the writer Abdel Rahman Munif, a continuation of his famous novel “Eastern Mediterranean” published 15 years ago. The novel falls within the category of prison literature, as Munif expresses a tense political reality in the Arab world, shedding light on the youth who fight for freedom and fall victim to oppression and political injustice.
The novel deals with the conflict between the authorities and the people, and particularly depicts the struggle of Arab youth who dream of change in the face of tyrannical regimes. Munif depicts this conflict through two fictional countries, Amorium and Moran, as symbols of the complex Arab reality. The novel narrates the experiences of political prisoners in the face of oppression and torture, making it a literary documentation that reflects the harsh conditions experienced by Arab peoples under oppressive regimes.
The novel is divided into three main chapters, beginning with the story of Adel Al-Khalidi, who meets his fellow prisoner Taleh Al-Arifi, and they share the details of their suffering and experiences inside prisons. The following chapters shed light on Al-Arifi’s suffering, and the novel ends with profound reflections on oppression and freedom.
In his novel, Munif reflects the continuity of oppression over time, stressing that real political change has not yet occurred despite the passing of years.
