The story revolves around an orphan girl named Judy Abbott, who gets a scholarship to study at Lincoln High School from a person she does not know, his alias is John Smith and she invented the name "Daddy-Long-Legs" for him because she could not see him and thank him, she only saw his long shadow.
The only payment Smith made to Judy for the grant was that she write to him once a month, without necessarily expecting a reply.
A story that details three years of Judy's life, from her leaving the orphanage to her graduation from high school.
The story revolves around the main characters of the novel: Judy Abbott: She is a smart and cheerful girl whose parents died when she was a little girl and she grew up in an orphanage where she developed her talent for writing. One of her articles catches the attention of John Smith (the man with the long legs) and leads to her obtaining a scholarship from him to Lincoln High School where she meets her friends Sally McBride and Julia Pendleton.
