The nature of tyranny and the fate of slavery
Abdul Rahman Al-Kawakibi
"The tyrant, when he sits on his throne and places his inherited crown on his head, sees himself as a human being who has become a god..."
The great thinker Abdul Rahman Al-Kawakibi lived during the second half of the nineteenth century, a period in which the Arab nations suffered a lot of weakness and humiliation, as the colonizers tried to usurp their lands and drain their resources. Abdul Rahman Al-Kawakibi diagnosed in his book “The Nature of Despotism and the Downfall of Slavery” the cause of this disease, which he saw as political despotism, in its many forms, including the despotism of ignorance over knowledge, and the despotism of the soul over the mind. He says: God created man free, led by reason, but he disbelieved and refused to be anything but a slave led by ignorance. He sees that the despot is a helpless individual, with no power or strength except through his helpers, the enemies of justice and supporters of injustice, and that the accumulation of excessive wealth generates despotism and harms the morals of individuals, and that despotism is the root of all corruption, so he finds that constitutional consultation is its cure.
